Overlooking the sea from her beautiful Marazion studio, Caitilin creates handmade accessories and homeware capturing the surrounding beauty of Cornwall. Her work is brought to life through captivating patterns on fabric, inspired by the flora and fauna of the Marazion countryside and the coastline. All Caitilin’s designs are unique and handcrafted, using premium, local fabrics to produce her quintessentially Cornish pieces.
What made you decide to start Caitlin's Cornish Textiles, and what's the inspiration behind it? What did you do before creating your brand?
I was a published author of two healthy first food recipe books and I have always had a love of cooking and the home. My mum taught me to sew and I have been sewing since I was a child. My textile business all started as a homemade, handmade venture. It began from some simple aprons I made my children, which in turn received a lot of praise. I have a love of beautiful fabrics and putting contrasting designs together. I became inspired to create and am now constantly expanding my range.
How are the products made and where are the fabrics sourced from?
All of my products are carefully made and designed myself, by hand using either strong cotton or quality cotton backed oilcloth. All my items are uniquely designed and handmade from a small studio in Cornwall, by the sea. I pride myself in having a no waste policy; packaging is made from recycled material and is recyclable. All fabrics are sourced from within the UK and I try to source them locally wherever I can. Any smaller scraps of fabric are used to make purses, or re-usable facial wipes.
Where does your inspiration come from?
Having a degree in geology, loving the outdoors and living in beautiful Cornwall, I am inspired by nature, the coast and the constantly changing seasons. I use predominantly florals, spots, stripes and maritime fabrics giving my range a bright, airy and fresh feel.
What have been the biggest challenges/achievements, or your favourite story on your journey so far?
I love the personal touch of having a small business, meaning I can work closely with my customers; often creating bespoke items for them. This gives a huge sense of happiness, making others smile! The positive feedback I get from my customers, is in turn inspiring and always makes my day. It just demonstrates the caring thoughtfulness of my customers, which is highly appreciated. As with any full time parents, juggling work and children is a balance and at busy times of the year my husband and children get involved, whether its cutting the fabric, packaging products or packing orders, the house becomes a busy family workforce!
How would you describe Caitlin's Cornish Textiles in three words?
