Does your little barker have a birthday? Let Alishea Buck of Salem Barkery provide the goods – she makes delicious, all-natural doggy treats by hand using only the highest quality ingredients. With her own German Shepard as chief taste tester, you know you’re in good hands (or paws should we say).

What made you decide to start Salem Barkery, and what's the inspiration behind it?

The inspiration for Salem Barkery came from our very own taste tester Nymeria. We are called Salem in the memory of our family dog growing up. We all want the best for our four legged friends including what we feed them and I was a little shocked to see all of the chemicals in store purchased dog treats. We have all seen the puppy dog eyes staring up at us when we sit down for a Netflix evening and the pooch can’t have the chocolate snacks on your lap… so we thought it was time to bake something that they will go crazy over.

What did you do before creating the Salem Barkery?

Prior to the first Covid lockdown, I worked as a project manager for a large hospitality business creating and managing all their refurbishments across Cornwall and the Southwest.

Where does your inspiration come from?

Our inspiration comes from creating clever, all natural renditions of treats we all love as humans, from doggy donuts to our new FURrero Rocher. There is always something new on the horizon and watching our customers tuck in is a wonderful feeling.

What have been the biggest challenges/achievements, or your favourite story on your journey so far?

Our biggest challenge so far was learning to walk before running, we have so many wonderful ideas and plans for the future we needed to find a balanced way of starting without taking on more than we can chew.

Our biggest achievement would have to be the relationships we are building with our client base and their furry families and being invited to a customer’s doggy birthday party has to be one of our highlights this year.

We have been completely overwhelmed with the support from the local communities and some of the requests to stock shops and holiday lets has been truly touching.

How would you describe Salem Barkery in three words?

Paw licking good!

What is your connection to Cornwall?

I am a Cornish Girl born and bred, growing up in Chacewater on the outskirts of Truro, we spent the summer holidays exploring Cornwall and of course Cornwall’s beaches with the family pooch.

Do you have a special spot in Cornwall that inspires you?

Our favourite spot in Cornwall has to be Hawkers Cove near Padstow. A short walk down a slate track takes you to a beautiful beach where families are able to enjoy the sand and sea with their four legged friends all year around.

What's next / any exciting plans?

Our next adventure is going to be doggy hampers for every occasion, these will be full of our wonderful treats and some amazing unique toys that we have imported all the way from the US.

Starting with Birthday hampers we will be spending the next few months designing and preparing our Halloween and Christmas themed dog hampers and stockings!
