From the all-important picnic blanket to wool throws and ponchos, Ebb Flow Cornwall’s collection of alfresco essentials will have you kitted out and ready for the season. Founded by two friends and mums, Anna and Alice, their label epitomises Cornish living, with high quality, ethically produced pieces that are perfect for the home, poolside, beach and beyond.
What made you decide to start Ebb Flow Cornwall, and what's the inspiration behind it?
When Anna and I met at baby swimming classes in early 2015, we knew straight away that we were kindred spirits and shared a similar life ethos. Being new mums some of the adventures we had known in life had been curtailed, so we were both on the look out for a new adventure, and a challenge that would keep our minds busy and motivated. When Anna mentioned her idea of selling hammam towels above Sennen beach I just knew it could be really good - we both saw the benefits of hammam towels for the Cornish outdoor lifestyle and we wanted to tell everyone about it! From the seeds of Anna’s idea we developed a brand idea which was focused around a desire to embrace the spirit of the outdoors and move freely through it unencumbered by ‘stuff'. The hammam towel was and is the foundation of our brand; it is multi-use, lightweight, practical, natural and beautiful. Perfect for use on the beach, in your backpack, as a scarf, towel or picnic blanket - it is the essential companion for everyday adventures.
What did you do before creating Ebb Flow Cornwall?
Alice: I had worked as a Project Manager at a Recruitment company before having my eldest son, Teddy, and starting my own online maternity wear business which gave me a good taster of the challenges and benefits of the online world. I subsequently sold my maternity business after moving to Cornwall from Manchester in 2014. I was looking after my 2 (now 3) boys when I first moved to Cornwall and I knew that I needed something else to keep my mind motivated!
Anna: I previously had a really successful coffee business in Bristol and South Wales, with an ex boyfriend. After we broke up and the business was sold I went on a huge traveling mission to Africa and Nepal, climbing mountains and going on some incredible adventures. I ended up in Cornwall on a complete whim with a tent and a surfboard for the summer. I met my husband in the pub at Sennen and never left!
Where does your inspiration come from?
Our inspiration is taken from our surroundings and our children. We are so privileged to live in such a beautiful part of the world and Cornwall is constantly influencing our product choices and brand ethos. Our children have a big impact on our business too as we are always considering families and how to make beach trips and outdoor adventures less cumbersome. We are also concerned about preserving the planet for our children's future and minimising our impact on it which is why we select products which are sustainable and made on a small scale.
What have been the biggest challenges/achievements, or your favourite story on your journey so far?
Our biggest achievement has been to grow a strong brand identity while allowing ebb flow to grow organically. We have always made sure we enjoy what we do and we laugh a lot. We try not to take things too seriously and we hope this shines through in what we do.
How would you describe Ebb Flow Cornwall in three words?
Bright, natural, spirited.
What is your connection to Cornwall?
Alice: Childhood memories - I met my husband on the beach at Port Chapel. I always knew this was the place I wanted to bring up my children.
Anna: I ended up here on a complete whim and I have never felt so at home. It's just the most magical place.
Do you have a special spot in Cornwall that inspires you?
Alice: The coast path from Treen to Porthcurno - such a beautiful dramatic landscape.
Anna: Vellendreath Valley at Sennen Beach - winter through to summer its my favourite space to sit and reflect and watch the incoming moods over the Atlantic - and the sunsets are always spectacular.
