Born from founder Alistair Frost’s love of adventure and the outdoors, Pentire was created to capture the feeling of being by the Cornish coast… in a non-alcoholic spirit. Noticing there was a movement of people becoming more conscious of their alcohol consumption, he set out trying to make the perfect alternative for those who love (and loved) a G&T. Foraging native botanicals around his home in North Cornwall’s idyllic Port Isaac, Alistair incorporated the local flavours of the area to masterfully create Pentire Adrift.

What made you decide to start Pentire, and what's the inspiration behind it?

We are ultimately inspired behind our belief in the power of active daily adventures and the lifestyle that our community and we live. In terms of celebrating that in a drink it’s all about less alcohol and a healthy choice.

I was working in the drinks industry in London in my late 20’s and noticed my friends and so many consumers hugely cutting down alcohol consumption. I had this idea drawn up for Pentire, and the more digging I did into local plant-life and the flavours and properties they had in distillation I thought that I just had to go all in and make something happen.

How do you create your non-alcoholic spirits?

We distil plants that are native to the area, a large part are sea herbs like sea purslane, rock samphire, ice lettuce, and so on, then others like rosemary and sage mixed with citrus. They are all hand-made by our team here and we feel very lucky to be able to be doing it.

Where does your inspiration come from?

Really mostly from outdoor companies, that might be outdoor clothing or equipment or a consumer good, just something that allows you to live a better life through a relationship with that product.

What have been the biggest challenges/achievements, or your favourite story on your journey so far?

Challenges – every day is a challenge, there is definitely no such thing as an easy ride, which everyone has experienced this year. There are alot of moving parts to all companies and there definitely are to ours, so something is usually cropping up all the time that we need to find a solution too.

Achievements – still every bottle we sell means the world, so thanks to all our customers! We have had fantastic moments like Gordon Ramsey streaming about his love for Pentire on his Instagram, to being able to work with the best in food and drink, like The Pig hotels, or Nathan Outlaw, Paul Ainsworth and so on. We are in around 15 countries so it’s great seeing traction abroad for us as we are only a year and a half old.

How would you describe Pentire in three words?

The flavour: coastal, herbaceous and fresh.

What's your favourite product from your range?

Our first SKU which is Pentire Adrift. It’s a really sophisticated liquid with heaps of different layers of flavour, it’s delicious!

What is your connection to Cornwall?

I moved down when I was 18 after a few fun surf trips here and never really looked back. I’m grateful to have been able to work in the drinks industry in London for a while, but I love being in Cornwall - getting in the sea every day and working hard with our amazing team at our site in Rock. We are up on the industrial estate behind Sharps Brewery.

Do you have a special spot in Cornwall that inspires you?

Ooooh would have to be in some of our favourite local surf spots getting waves with my friends. But I would probably get told off if I named the places!

What's next / any exciting plans?

We want to lead the sector and are always striving to. This year you will see some growth from us and some interesting positioning that is hopefully totally unique for any drinks company ever before. We are really passionate about contributing to the sector and bringing in new customers to our niche and having an amazing relationship with our customer base, which we have started doing and cant wait to build upon. We are growing our team and all parts of the company to gear up!
